Most venues give you one building and one look. Ushers Ferry gives you a whole village: a country church seating 75, a central gazebo with bench seating for 100, period buildings along the lanes, wooded grounds, and a modern lodge completed in 2014 that holds 300 with a full catering kitchen.
For a photographer that combination is unusually generous. A ceremony in a hundred year old church, portraits along a village street with no cars in frame, and a reception in a modern room with real windows and a working kitchen. Very few venues at any price give you a period setting and modern infrastructure on the same site.
It is run by Cedar Rapids Parks and Recreation, which means city rates rather than private venue rates, and it is about fifteen minutes from my studio. If your budget is real and you want a setting nobody else in town has, this is the first place I would send you.

- Genuinely strong. The Lodge holds the full 300, so a gazebo ceremony has a real indoor answer rather than a tent. You lose the village as your ceremony backdrop, which is the actual cost.

- What's included
- Packages have historically bundled a ceremony site (church and/or gazebo) with a reception space (Town Hall and/or Pavilion, or the Lodge) and dressing buildings. Confirm the current package contents, and confirm what tables, chairs and linens are included.
- Parking
- Parking close to the Lodge, per the venue. Ask about the walk from parking to the gazebo and to the church, since a village site means guests move between buildings.
- Where guests stay
- None on site. Cedar Rapids hotels are ten to fifteen minutes away with plenty of inventory.
- End of night
- A municipal facility runs on municipal rules. Get end times, alcohol policy and vendor requirements in writing early, because these are less negotiable than at a private venue.
- Vendor rules
- The Lodge has a full catering kitchen, which usually means open or preferred caterers rather than a single in house option. Confirm the alcohol policy specifically, since city facilities often have particular requirements around licensed service and insurance.
Worth knowing early: It is a historic village and a public site. Ask whether the village is open to visitors on your date, whether any programming or event overlaps, and which buildings you may actually enter and photograph inside. Those answers shape your whole portrait plan and they vary.
