What you actually need to know

Guest capacity

Up to 155 guests. The auditorium seats about 120 and the exhibit hall can be set for either a ceremony or a reception. Rooms scale down through two classrooms and a conference room, which double as getting ready space.

Ceremony sites

The outdoor amphitheatre is the ceremony spot, added to the full package for $500 or taken on its own. Indoors, the auditorium is the named rain location, which is more explicit than most venues manage.

Reception spaces

Exhibit and reception hall, auditorium and banquet hall, plus the deck and patio outside. Package A includes all of them at once, so the evening can move between spaces rather than being flipped in one.

Getting ready

Both classrooms and the conference room are included as getting ready suites in the full package. With a Friday afternoon start you can be set up the day before rather than racing the morning.

If it rains

Genuinely well defined. The ceremony only package at $1,000 names the auditorium as the rain location; the $500 version does not include it. If you are taking the cheaper ceremony package, settle what happens in weather before you sign.

What it costs

From the published 2020 rental agreement: Package A at $3,200 for the whole building, the outdoor amphitheatre a $500 add on, ceremony only packages at $1,000 and $500, high top tables $100 and patio chair delivery $50. A $1,000 wedding deposit applies against the total, plus a non refundable $100 alcohol deposit. Those figures are from a 2020 document, so confirm current rates, but the structure is the useful part.

What's included

In the full package: the building, cleaning service, tables and chairs for indoor use, kitchen appliances, plates, cookware, utensils, coffee pots and reusable cups, free wifi, and audio visual depending on the space. Coffee itself is yours to bring. Tables and chairs used outdoors cost extra, which is easy to miss when planning a patio cocktail hour.

Parking

On site, and shared with the public during open hours like everything else. Tell guests that the car park is a working nature centre car park rather than a private one.

Where guests stay

None on site. It is inside Cedar Rapids, so hotels are close, and the Friday to Sunday window means guests are not being asked to do everything in one evening.

End of night

The rental window is the constraint rather than a nightly curfew, running to noon on Sunday. Confirm quiet hours and what time amplified music has to stop, since this is a wildlife property with neighbours.

Vendor rules

Any caterer must be pre approved by staff, but there is no restriction on the type of caterer, so this is effectively open catering with a phone call. Alcohol is the tighter part: beer and wine only, no hard liquor, and either a licensed vendor or the renter may serve. Liability insurance naming Indian Creek Nature Center as additional insured is required at $1,000,000 per occurrence and $1,000,000 aggregate, with proof three weeks before the event. That is a real task rather than a formality, so start it early.

Worth knowing early: The environmental rules change what your day can look like, and they are not negotiable on a conservation property. No rice, glitter or confetti, because they harm animals. No helium balloons released. No Styrofoam or polystyrene. No smoking anywhere on the property, indoors or out. No staples or tape on any wall, door or surface. Tell your florist, your planner and whoever is organising the send off at the start rather than the week before, because the classic exit shot needs a different idea here.
