Frequently Asked

Everything you might be wondering about working together. Don't see your question? Just ask.

How do we book a session or wedding date?

Start with the contact form or an email to info@studioy.co. We'll talk through your date and vision, and a signed agreement with a retainer officially holds your date. Dates are never held on a verbal — first signed, first reserved.

How far in advance should we reach out?

Weddings: 9–14 months for peak-season Saturdays, though it's always worth asking about closer dates. Portrait sessions: 2–4 weeks is usually plenty, with more lead time in the fall senior/family rush.

Do you require a deposit?

A retainer is due at signing to reserve your date, with the balance due before the session or wedding. Payment plans are no problem — many couples split the balance over several months.

What happens if we need to reschedule?

Life happens — illness, weather, a newborn arriving on their own schedule. Portrait sessions reschedule freely to the next available date. For weddings, your retainer transfers to your new date whenever my calendar allows.

Where are you based, and do you travel?

Studio Y is based in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. I photograph regularly in Iowa City, Des Moines, Dubuque, and the Quad Cities — and I'm available worldwide. Travel within Iowa is included in every collection.

What is your photography style?

Contemporary fine art with an organic, honest aesthetic. Practically, that means minimal posing, real moments, careful light, and editing that feels timeless rather than trendy — images that look like the day felt.

Do you work with a second photographer?

A second photographer is available for weddings and recommended for larger celebrations or when getting-ready happens in two places at once. We'll decide together during planning.

What if the weather turns?

We adapt. Overcast light is genuinely beautiful, drizzle makes for romantic umbrella photos, and every outdoor plan has an indoor fallback. In fifteen-plus years, weather has never ruined a gallery.

How many images will we receive?

A full wedding day typically delivers 500–800 edited images. Portrait sessions deliver 40–75. Every delivered image is individually edited — no filler, no unedited dumps.

When will our gallery be ready?

Portrait galleries arrive within 2–3 weeks. Wedding galleries arrive within 6–8 weeks, with a sneak peek within days of the wedding.

Do we get printing rights?

Yes — every collection includes full-resolution digital files with a print release, delivered through a custom online gallery you can download from and share with family.

Do you offer prints and albums?

Archival prints, canvases, and heirloom albums are available through my professional lab, and senior sessions include a print credit. Files are wonderful; walls and albums are better.

Do you edit every photo? Can we request retouching?

Every delivered image is edited for color, tone, and consistency. Deeper retouching requests are handled case by case — just ask.
