Do the arithmetic, because it is the whole story. The Backbone Auditorium holds two hundred and costs $87.50 Monday to Thursday and $175 Friday to Sunday. That is under a dollar a head for the room. There is nothing else in this guide, or realistically in Iowa, that puts two hundred people under a roof for the price of a good dinner for two.
There are actually two buildings here and they are not interchangeable. The Auditorium takes 200 at $87.50 and $175. The Beach Lodge takes 125 and costs $137.50 and $275, and it sits by the water. So the bigger room is the cheaper one, which is the opposite of how venues normally work, and the answer to which you want depends entirely on whether you would rather have the lake or the space.
The park is the reason any of this is worth an hour and a quarter in the car from Cedar Rapids. Backbone was dedicated in 1920 as Iowa's first state park. The Devil's Backbone, the narrow bedrock ridge the place is named for, is the highest ground in northeast Iowa. The Civilian Conservation Corps built the dams, the cabins, the boat house and the auditorium itself between 1933 and 1941, and there is a CCC museum on site. Twenty one miles of trail and some of the best trout water in the state run through it.

- Nothing beyond restrooms. Arrive ready. The building opens at ten and there is no morning in it before that.

- The building is the rain plan and it holds your whole guest list, which is more than several venues here at fifty times the price can say. What weather costs you is the ceremony spot and the walk, not the wedding.

- State park day-use lodges run from 10:00am and must be cleaned and vacated by 10:30pm. That is an out-of-the-building deadline with the tidying inside it, so plan the last dance for around half past nine and decide in advance who is stacking chairs.

- Everything is brought in, including the caterer. Settle alcohol first and settle it with the park office: this is Iowa Department of Natural Resources ground and the rules are the department's rather than a venue manager's, so ask rather than assume.
Worth knowing early: The distance and the day-use rule together. Dundee is about an hour and a quarter from Cedar Rapids and further from anywhere else, and you get the building for one day with no setup the night before. That combination means a convoy of cars arriving at ten in the morning with everything a wedding needs, and leaving with it at half past ten at night. It is completely doable and it is the reason the price is what it is, so go in planning the logistics rather than discovering them.
